Get Closer to Radio 1Xtra

1Xtra recently ran a trial on live streaming with their specialist DJs who present the 10pm-1am slots. The idea was to ‘Get Closer’ to the DJs by watching them prep for their shows, live chat whilst watching them in the studio and see the reveal for their mystery guests.

On Friday, the Hip Hop M1x Show’s Charlie Sloth got the chance to be involved. He rounded off the week with UK rapper Baby Blue dropping by the studio to perform a freestyle for Charlie’s regular feature Fire In The Booth!

This was a great opportunity for Charlie to gain more exposure and you can check out who did what on the live stream on Radio 1Xtra’s Get Closer page.

Every month on the M1x Shows we have an artist showcase where the DJs show their support to MCs, DJs and musicians who are doing big things for their scene. Here’s who dropped by the 1Xtra studios last the week…

MONDAY: CJ Beatz was joined by the beautiful DJ Yasmin for a live guest mix.

TUESDAY: Garage DJ Freddo and vocalist Nicole Marie stopped by on DJ Q’s show and did their thing live!

WEDNESDAY: Crissy Criss had Formation Records head-honcho DJ SS in for a chat about various things including how he got his name, plus he dropped a mix full of exclusives!

THURSDAY: Young Lion had Lisa Hyper fresh off the plane from Jamaica, live on the show for a chat and a freestyle!

FRIDAY: Charlie Sloth had Don Strapzy in the studio for Fire In The Booth!

THURSDAY: Young Lion had Vybz Kartel’s protege Popcaan on the show.

FRIDAY: Charlie Sloth brings in homegrown talent Ty to talk about UK hip hop, his new album ‘Special Kind Of Fool’. Ramson Badbones gives some Fire In The Booth and there’s a guset mix from DJ Roast.

The Hip Hop M1x Show with Charlie Sloth

Charlie Sloth kicked off his first Hip Hop M1x Show on Radio 1Xtra on Friday 30th April which was a good way to start the bank holiday.

Charlie was joined in the studio by the natural born spitta, Mystro, who performed a sick freestyle for the ‘Fire In The Booth’ with Nathan Flutebox Lee (he beatboxes on a flute). There were some big classics from N.W.A, Jay-Z and Ice Cube plus some exclusive dubplates from UK rappers Little Dee and Ramson Badbones.

In keeping with the mix element of the M1x Shows strand, Charlie had a guest mix from DJ Gone, whose youTube hip hop show is the most watched in the UK.

Expect big shows like this from Charlie every Friday night 1-4am on BBC Radio 1Xtra.

The RnB M1x Show with CJ Beatz

So, this week sees two new DJs join the Radio 1Xtra M1x show’s line up. The first of which is CJ Beatz taking over the RnB M1x Show.

He’s bringing a fresh approach to RnB on Monday nights and his first show was full of high energy, skilled mixing and serious scratching (of the turntable kind obviously!).

He laid down a mix all about When RnB Met Dance, which was a great way to keep up the pace and club-night atmosphere. He also dropped some big new tracks, dubplate specials and rounded off the show powering through 32 RnB Classics in 30 minutes!

Who said the weekend had to end on Sunday?

The second new DJ is Charlie Sloth with his first ever Hip Hop M1x Show this Friday 30th April.

After the sad news of Guru’s death last week we dedicated the first hour of Friday’s Hip Hop M1x Show on Radio 1Xtra to the legendary MC.

Gangstarr and Guru’s Jazzmatazz classics in the mix with contributions from Trevor Nelson, Treble T, Gilles Peterson and Seani B selecting their favourite cuts and a special tribute mix from MistaJam.
