On this week’s 6 Mix on BBC 6 Music, Dave Pearce is joined by cultural icon Boy George to talk about his life in dance music and clubbing.

From his days as a cloakroom attendant at the infamous Blitz Club, dance music has always played a pivotal role in George’s life. There’s also a premiere of a new dance track he’s made featuring George Michael.

You can catch the show on BBC 6 Music on Sunday July 17th at 8pm and repeated on Saturday July 24th at 10pm. You can also listen again via the BBC iPlayer.

Dave Pearce meets dance music legend Frankie Knuckles for a 6 Mix special.

On this week’s 6 Mix we were lucky enough to be joined by a genuine legend of dance music, “the Godfather of House”, Frankie Knuckles.

Dave Pearce and Frankie Knuckles, May 2011

In this two hour special for BBC 6 Music, Frankie hooked up with long time DJ buddy Dave Pearce to talk about the origins of house music, the clubbing scene in the New York and Chicago during the late 1980s/early 90s and his remarkable career as a producer and DJ. We also found time to play some of Frankie’s favourite dance tunes, including tracks from Robert Owens, Derrick May, and Alison Limerick.

You can listen again here, and also find out what Dave had to say to The Guardian about the legendary Mr Knuckles here.

120 minutes of big room tunes and about the same number of questionable gags. There is only one Judge Jules.

The legend that is Judge Jules needs no introduction. He’s a judge because his law studies helped the early rave scene swerve legal threats, and he’s a Jules because his mum liked the name.

He has been broadcasting on BBC Radio 1 for over 10 years and each week he welcomes you into the “Big Room”, playing only big room anthems … everything from house to trance. When you listen to the show you’re in the main room of the biggest club in the world every Friday night — that’s the mission.

During the show Jules gets some of his the dance world’s hottest talent (including the likes of Tiesto, Ferry Corste, Axwell & Deadmau5) to check in, pick their favourite tracks of the moment and get into the mix.

The show is more banging than a world heavyweight boxing championship, as Jules would probably (not) say.

The best names from electronic and experimental music from the last three decades play the music that inspired them — and tell you why.

The 6 Mix is BBC 6 Music’s electronic and experimental programming strand, celebrating all things which go ‘beep,’ and giving you a chance to hear musicians and DJs talking about the tunes which make them do what they do.

A killer line-up includes Andrew Weatherall, Derrick May, Erol Alkan and Orbital, who play the music they love on rotation throughout the year, interspersed with special programmes celebrating music from all different styles. Over the last year you may have heard Wall of Sound boss Mark Jones talking synth-pop with Gary Numan, or The Human League, Air and Phoenix celebrating all things French. We even had Yoko Ono sharing her musical passions.

The 6 Mix on BBC 6 Music; mixing things up is what we do best.

Dave Pearce brings his legendary Dance Anthems to BBC 6 Music, playing club classics from the last three decades and getting you on the phone to share your clubbing memories and favourite tunes from back in the day. It’s also the place to hear in-depth specials with dance music pioneers from Moby to the Pet Shop Boys, talking to Dave about their life in clubbing and picking the tracks that have inspired their music. There’s new music too; every week Dave showcases a new unsigned producer making music in their bedroom, alongside his current favourites from his record box.
