On this week’s 6 Mix on BBC 6 Music, Dave Pearce is joined by cultural icon Boy George to talk about his life in dance music and clubbing.

From his days as a cloakroom attendant at the infamous Blitz Club, dance music has always played a pivotal role in George’s life. In this show he shares the soundtrack to his clubbing life with Dave, from Bowie to Telex, Sylvester to Strafe via the E Zee Possee and More Protein Records up to Felix and Duke from his days as a resident at Progress and Miss Moneypennys. There’s also a premiere of a new dance track he’s made featuring George Michael.

You can catch the show on BBC 6 Music on Sunday July 17th at 8pm and repeated on Saturday July 24th at 10pm. You can also listen again via the BBC iPlayer.

On this week’s 6 Mix we were lucky enough to be joined by a genuine legend of dance music, “the Godfather of House”, Frankie Knuckles.

Dave Pearce and Frankie Knuckles, May 2011

In this two hour special for BBC 6 Music, Frankie hooked up with long time DJ buddy Dave Pearce to talk about the origins of house music, the clubbing scene in the New York and Chicago during the late 1980s/early 90s and his remarkable career as a producer and DJ. We also found time to play some of Frankie’s favourite dance tunes, including tracks from Robert Owens, Derrick May, and Alison Limerick.

You can listen again here, and also find out what Dave had to say to The Guardian about the legendary Mr Knuckles here.

Somethin’ Else are delighted to have been commissioned to create a brand new cross-platform project for BBC 6 Music, fusing our twin passions of music and digital content.

The commission – called Now Playing @6Music – will comprise of a weekly radio show hosted by Tom Robinson, airing the most shared, recommended and discussed music online and a blog ‘living’ seven days a week online. The show is the first joint commission by BBC 6 Music and BBC Audio and Music Interactive (A&MI) and will track online buzz around “alternative” music to discover the most popular topics and music downloads. Listeners can build playlists and give opinions on tracks via the 6 Music website, and on its Facebook and Twitter pages. We’ll be busy tracking and taking part in a myriad of online music-related conversations, reflecting the music week online, on air.

A&MI managing editor Chris Kimber said, “I want this to be a ground-breaking new show, which is built from the ground up on audience interactivity, rather than bolting it on. Every piece of music will come from the audience and from online music fans – this is music radio 2.0.”

Paul Rodgers, editor, BBC Radio 6 Music added, “This show will build on a dialogue 6 Music already has with its audience and further develop the station as a digital destination.”

Now Playing @6Music launches on Friday April 8 at 7pm.
