The Music Week

The Music Week, 6Music

Somethin' Else was commissioned to make BBC 6 Music’s flagship news magazine show The Music Week from September 2006. Each Sunday between 1pm and 2pm we delve into the depths of the music world to present BBC listeners with the latest news and entertaining features.

Presented by Imran Ahmed and Julie Cullen we not only reflect on the headlines but make them too. In just our first few months we were first with the truth behind Kylie Minogue’s rumoured Glastonbury performance, the first people Ash spoke to about their new material and the show that first spoke to Amy Winehouse about her proposed duet with Pete Doherty.

We also aim to deliver a unique twist on the news. When Syd Barrett’s house was put up for sale The Music Week was the only show to get a tour. While the rest of the press was writing about an emerging music scene in Southend we went down and got the band’s to show us around and when Manchester’s coolest new music venue the Warehouse Project opened its doors we were poking our noses around before the paint had dried.

Plus, we chat in-depth to some of the biggest names in music – the Kaiser Chiefs, Franz Ferdinand, The Stranglers, The Flaming Lips, Tori Amos, Keane, Kasabian, and Nigel Godrich are just some of the names we’ve already had in the studio.

The show is a truly interactive offering as every week listeners get their say online and on air in the Great at Debate where we dissect a burning issue guaranteed to get music lovers talking. It’s also more than just the radio show as we offer the best of our features as video, pictures and downloads on the 6 Music website.
