'Casino Royale', Ian Fleming's first James Bond novel, is a stark and atmospheric page-turner that is as engaging today as when it was first written in 1952.
As a new $72million film version of the book opens in cinemas around the world, Andrew Graham Dixon examines the life of Ian Fleming in relation to who and what inspired him to create James Bond.
This BBC4 documentary combines previously unseen archive of Fleming with dramatised readings from the novel and follows Andrew on a mission to uncover the real stories behind Casino Royale. He interviews friends and family of the author and those involved in the new film, including the new 007 Daniel Craig, and discovers why this short novel gave birth to the most famous fictional spy the world has ever seen.
The Real Casino Royale will air on BBC4 at 9pm on Sunday 19th of November 2006.
