01/06/06 - Bobby Friction to star in 'Generation 7/7'

Radio One DJ Bobby Friction has starred in ‘Generation 7/7’, a brand new authored documentary to be shown on C4 on Friday June 9th at 10:30am. The programme follows Bobby’s journey, investigating Islamaphobia, and how, through public ignorance, it currently affects all Asians.

Bobby’s journey begins in Beeston, Leeds, where three of the 7/7 bombers were brought up. Locals are still angry at the way in which the media portrayed the men, and Bobby finds initial hostility from young locals who assume he is just another member of the media looking to paint Muslim extremists in a stereotypically negative light.

In the documentary, Bobby uses his own experience as part of the younger generation to investigate the breaking down of previous shared identity into clear cultural and religious divides. Bobby asks what young British Asians really think about race and identity in a society post-9/11 and 7/7, and what happened to make young Asians suddenly start to distance themselves from one another. He questions the implications of such events and modern social segregation for cultural relations in the UK today, relating to changing historical portrayal and social stereotypes.

Bobby Friction’s unique perspective on modern Britain provides fresh, new investigation into important and controversial topics of the 21st Century. This documentary follows his successful previous investigative programmes, such as ‘Vote Friction’, looking at the BNP in Burnley. ‘Generation 7/7’ is one of two self-authored documentaries commissioned by Channel Four for this year, both of which will prove to be powerful and insightful viewing.

The programme is produced by Redback Films, and will be repeated on Channel Four on 28th September at 10:00am, 3rd November at 9:30am and 24th November at 9:30am.
