Christian O’Connell has become the first presenter to win a total of ten Sony Gold Awards. This year Christian won Best Music Personality of the Year and Best Use of Branded Content for his Absolute Radio Breakfast Show. Christian also won a Silver Award for Best Breakfast Show!

Gemma Cairney won a Sony Gold for her BBC Radio 1 documentary, ‘Bruising Silence’ on domestic abuse.

Colin Murray won a Sony Gold with BBC Radio 5 Live for their Olympics Best Sports Programme.

Phil Lester and Dan Howell (aka AmazingPhil and danisnotonfire) won the Sony Golden Headphones Award which saw them pitted against practically every DJ in the Country and was voted for by the public.

BBC Radio 1′s Review Show scooped the prestigious Gold Award for  ‘Best Use Of Multiplatform’. It’s the second consecutive year  we’ve won Gold in this category after Now Playing @6Music scooped the award this time last year. The judges said:

“Using all the tools they have at their disposal to make better-sounding radio, this entry was clearly designed for digital natives that know their music.”

Showing our diversity, Our BBC Radio 4 production ‘For My Boy’ also took home the Bronze Award in the ‘Best Drama’ category – our first ever Sony Award in this area.

SE Talent also had a bumper evening with Gold Awards for four of our presenters. Gemma Cairney picked up Gold for her Radio 1 documentary ‘Bruising Science’ whilst  BBC Radio 1′s Dan & Phil picked up the inaugural Golden Headphone award, voted for by members of the public. Not bad considering their first weekly show was only in January!

Elsewhere there were two Golds for Absolute Radio’s Christian O Connell and a gold for Colin Murray for his contribution to BBC radio 5 Live’s Olympic coverage.

The set kicks off 6 Mix Pioneers month; a series of five programmes hosted by DJs who have pioneered a certain genre of dance music. Following Grandmaster sflash will be shows and mixes from trance pioneer Sasha, the inventor of  techno Derrick May, French House supremo and Manager of Ed Banger records Busy P an electro clash queen Miss Kitten. Each show will feature the DJs talking about their life in music as well as playing a selection of tunes  old and new.

You can hear Grandmaster Flash’s show on Friday May 3 at 10pm and will be available online for 7 days after broadcast. Here’s a taster clip:

The 6 Mix is BBC 6 Music’s flagship dance programme. Since we tok over production in 2008, guest hosts have included Thom Yorke, Jamie XX and Massive Attack alongside residencies from Orbital, Andrew Weatherall, Groove Armada and Erol Alkan.

As part of the filming, Colin has been lucky enough to play a game against Tim Henman. Wonder who won that one?

Building on our experiences working with the brand on last year’s Red Bull Bedroom Jam, our crew will document the experiences of 15 unsigned bands over the course of a week in Red Bull’s superb Studio facilities – covering the recording process, live performances and gaining a valuable insight into what drives and inspires the heavy music scene’s most talented underground musicians.

Over 600 bands have already uploaded their video to be in with the chance of earning a once-in-a-lifetime experience at Red Bull Studios in London and the opportunity to perform on stage at the UK’s premier heavy music festival, Download, in June.
