Jez’s Jazz in the Round: 29 October

jez-on-stage

Hi,

A Mercury prize nominated trio, an electric-jazz project inspired by The Residents and a Senegalese story teller – how’s that for a Monday night out?

Jazz In The Round has a busy run in to Xmas and news of some special events in a moment, but first to the delights lined up for you on Monday 29th of October.

When I saw the Roller Trio play a BBC Introducing gig in Manchester recently it was immediately obvious that these three young Leeds graduates were heading somewhere good and quick. But blimey they don’t hang about and in September were nominated for the Mercury Prize. (They won’t win because it’s against the laws of physics for a jazz group to win the Mercury but being nominated is bloody brilliant.) Big chunky grooves, loops and some serious blowing make The Rollers a must see – which means you can’t be late because they’re on at 8! Have a preview listen here http://www.rollertrio.com/

Then we’ll be soothed by one of the earth’s most beautiful sounds – the kora played by a master of the 21-string instrument, Senegal’s Kadialy Kouyate in our solo spot.

Finally we welcome back a drummer who as one quarter of Sons of Kemet played one of JITR’s most memorable gigs to date. His new band Hello Skinny – named after a tune by mighty US avant-gardists The Residents – also features Kemet’s leader, saxophonist Shabaka Hutchings. Let’s try out a few terms – psych-dub, freak- jazz. I’ve heard them, they’re great – have a listen at http://soundcloud.com/hello_skinny and then come along.

So it’s the usual deal. Monday October the 29th. Bar from 6, we kick off at 8 and run through ’til about 11. The audience are brilliant and seem to be open to whatever we line up. We’d really like you to spread the word, so as I said on the last night, please tell your two best friends!

Now two dates for your diary. On Sunday November 18th in the afternoon JITR will be taking over The Clore Ballroom at the Royal Festival Hall for a marathon FREE London Jazz Festival Special. Believe me we have a monster lineup and I’ll mail details soon. But we are converting The Clore in to The Round so we need you there to fill it!

Finally on Sunday December the 9th we have the JITR Xmas party back at The Cockpit from 6 till late. We’re putting together a special Xmas party band and there’ll be some great djs. More news to follow.

Hope to see you at JITR at The Cockpit and elsewhere soon.

Cheers

Jez
