In November 3 1987, BBC 6 Music and then Radio London DJ Dave Pearce introduced hip hop group Public Enemy live on stage at London’s Hammersmith Odeon. The next year, the band sampled a recording of Dave’s intro for the opening track of their seminal 1988 album ‘It Takes A Nation Of Millions to Hold Us Back’ which went on to sell millions of copies worldwide and break rap music into the mainstream.
Two decades on, Public Enemy frontman Chuck D hooked up with Dave at Somethin’ Else’s studios to reminisce about their days on the 1980s hip hop scene and where their journeys have taken them since. As they hadn’t seen each other for 23 years you can image there was a lot talk about! You can hear the result on a 6 Mix special. for BBC 6 Music broadcast on Boxing Day at 8pm.
