Jazz on 3 this week…

This week we’ve Scandinavian super-group Atomic, recorded in concert at London’s Vortex Jazz Club. Over the last ten years and six albums, Atomic have helped reinvent the image of Scandinavian jazz: from glacial to volcanic. Jez speaks to the powerhouse rhythm section, bassist Ingebrigt Håker-Flaten and drummer Paal Nilssen-Love before they take to the stage with pianist Håvard Wiik, Frederik Ljungkvist on reeds and trumpeter Magnus Broo.

Geoff Winston, a Jazz on 3 listener and graphic designer was in the audience on the night and sent us his drawings of Atomic and Vandermark 5, who were also on the bill.

Then half way through the show we celebrate two key figures in British jazz. Flugelhorn player and composer Kenny Wheeler and vocalist Norma Winstone have been performing and composing for each other for the last 40 years. From big band blowouts to the intimate session that you’ll hear tonight, their personal and musical kinship is one of a kind. John Fordham discusses their evolving partnership before they perform together with guitarist John Parricelli in an exclusive studio session.
