This week, hear the results of Jazz on 3′s night at Ronnie Scott’s British Jazz Festival. We’ve a double bill: in the second half of the programme the latest incarnation of Stan Sulzmann’s band, Neon, featuring some of the cream of this country’s young talent – but first, that gem of British piano playing, John Taylor.
When we invited John to play we gave him carte blanche, and he chose to play with saxophonist Julian Arguelles – they’ve collaborated in various groups on-and-off for 2 decades but have never played in duo before, until tonight. Listen out for a sublime version of JT’s classic tune, ‘Ambleside’, with John’s trademark rhythmic string damping.
Then Neon closes out the show. The band features Tim Giles on drums, piano man of the moment, Kit Downes, and vibes player Jim Hart. Stan’s performed on Ronnie’s stage every decade since the ‘60s, but he sounds as excited by the music as he did 40 years ago when firing off this brilliant young group.
Monday 9 August at 23.30 (15mins later than normal) on BBC Radio 3
