Tonight’s Jazz On 3 features a double bill of concerts recorded during the recent Partager Festival at King’s Place in North London. Partager was curated by promoter Patsy Craig who wanted to bring together artists from New York, Paris nd London – with London as the bridge between two other great jazz cities. To start the show we’ve a short, dynamic set from Donkey Monkey, an acclaimed duo comprising pianist Eve Risser and percussionist Yuko Oshima who, according to their website “have drawn an ink moustache on the face of international creative music’.
The second set comes from pianist, Sophia Domancich alongside New York heavyweight drum n bass combo Hamid Drake and William Parker. A mainstay of the French free music scene, Domancich has remained largely under the radar in the UK, despite working relationships with British improvisers including Paul Rodgers, Tony Levin and the late Elton Dean stretching back to the late 1970s. In conversation with Jez she explains her approach to trio playing: “i like to play harmonies, i like to play rhythm, i like to feel free to play what the music wants at the time”.
Jazz on 3 – Monday 5 July at 23.15 on BBC Radio 3
